Back to Auckland - Rangitoto Island

For my last day in New Zealand, I took a ferry to Rangitoto Island, 10 kms away from the city centre of Auckland. The Rangitoto Island is part of the Hauraki Gulf. From the wharf, you have a view of another small island of the gulf.

Past the little wooden houses half-hidden in the forest, the adventure begins...

Rangitoto is a volcanic island that erupted about 600 years ago. The lava soil is black, contrasting with the blue of the sea. It can get pretty hot here on sunny days!

Many plants grow here. Among them, the pohutukawa and its bright red flowers.

Trees can get so rough and deformed that they look like sculpted stone.

At the end of the track, a view of Devonport and the city centre.

Back to the hostel, after a little rest, we had fun singing with Ishbel and her ukulele, Mathilde and Hubert. That was a great last evening in NZ!
